What is peritonitis and what are the most common causes?
A
- Acute inflammation of the peritoneum.
2. Usually a perforation of an ulcer or hollow viscus leading to bacterial infection.

What is this a presentation of?
Tachycardia, pyrexia, constant abdominal pain, board-like rigidity, percussive tenderness and guarding.

How is suspected peritonitis investigated?
A
FBC (high WCC), amylase, erect CXR, AXR, CT most likely to identify cause.

What is the management for peritonitis?
A
IV fluids, antibiotics, analgesia, surgery to remediate cause.
