Peritoneum and peritoneal cavity Flashcards
Parietal peritoneum
Supplied by same vasculature and same somatic nerve supply as the region of the wall it lines. Sensitive to pressure, pain, heat and cold, and laceration. Pain is generally well localized, EXCEPT for that on the central part of the diaphragm where innervation is provided by the phrenic nerves; irritation here is often referred to C3-C5 dermatomes over the shoulder.
Visceral peritoneum
Served by same supply as the organs it covers. INSENSITIVE to touch, heat and cold, and laceration; stimulated primarily by stretching and chemical irritation. Poorly localized pain, referred to dermatomes of the spinal ganglia providing sensory fibers; pain from foregut derivates is experienced in epigastric region, midgut derivates in the umbilical region, hindgut derivatives in the pubic region.
Intraperitoneal organs
Almost completely covered with visceral peritoneum, e.g. stomach and spleen. DOES NOT mean inside peritoneal cavity! Intraperitoneal organs are invaginated into the closed sac. (Fist pressed into inflated balloon)
