Peritoneal Cavity Flashcards
What is the structure separating the thoracic cavity and the abdominal cavity?
Diaphragm
What is the peritoneal cavity?
Space in the abdomen lined by a serous membrane called the peritoneum
What is the peritoneum?
Layers of a type of simple squamous epithelium called mesothelium wich produce a serous fluid lubricating the abdominal organs
What is the name of the bony ridge between the abdominal cavity and the pelvic cavity?
Are they continuos cavities?
Pelvic brim
They’re continuously
What is visceral peritoneum?
What is parietal peritoneum?
The layer of peritoneum in contact with the viscera (organs)
The layer of peritoneum in contact with the abdominal cavity
What type of cells make up the peritoneum?
Mesothelium = simple squamous epithelium
What are the 2 types of organs with respect to their position with the peritoneum?
Intra-peritoneal viscera
Retroperitoneal viscera
What viscera is completely enveloped by the peritoneum?
Liver
Stomach
Spleen
Parts of Small intestine and large intestine
What are retropertoneal viscera/organs?
Organs that only have their anterior surface in contact with the peritoneum
They are organs that are behind the peritoneum
What are some examples of retroperitoneal organs?
Kidneys
Pancreas (except for tail)
What is a mesentry?
A double fold of peritoneum that allows intraperitoneal organs to be attached to the posterior abdominal wall, receive blood, lymphatics and nerves without penetrating the peritoneal cavity
What is a peritoneal ligament?
Double folds of peritoneum connecting intraperitoneal ligaments to one another
What is the pneumonic to remember the Retroperitoneal structures?
SAD PUCKER
What are the Retroperitoneal structures using the pneumonic SAD PUCKER?
Supra-renal glands (adrenals)
Aorta
Duodenum
Pancreas
Ureters
Colon (ascending and descending)
Kidneys
Oesophagus
Rectum
What are the intraperitoneal structures?
Stomach
Liver
Spleen
