peritoneal cavity Flashcards
quick access to the peritoneal cavity
vertical incision on the linea alba from the xiphoid proccess to the pubic symphysis.
then make a horizontal incision from the right to the left midaxillary line passing through the umbilicus and reflect laterally on the four muscle flaps.
the greater sac of the peritoneal cavity
the large portion between the parietal and visceral peritoneum of the abdominal wall
it divides into supracolic and infracolic by the transverse colon.
- supracolic divided by the falciform lig. into four: rt and Lt. ant. and post.
- infracolic is divided by the root of the mesentry: Rt. infracolic and Lt. infracolic space
falciform ligament
a fibrous structure that connects the anterior part of the liver to the ventral wall of the abdomen. … The falciform ligament attaches to the liver between the right and left lobes as well as attaching to the inferior diaphragmatic surface.
the lesser sac of the peritoneum
the space deep to the greater sac and lesser omenta
gastrocolic ligament
a portion of the greater omentum that stretches from the greater curvature of the stomach to the transverse colon.
round ligament of liver (ligamentum teres)
a ligament that forms part of the free edge of the falciform ligament of the liver. It connects the liver to the umbilicus. It is the remnant of the left umbilical vein.
round ligament of liver (ligamentum teres)
a ligament that forms part of the free edge of the falciform ligament of the liver. It connects the liver to the umbilicus. It is the remnant of the left umbilical vein.
portal vein
the main vessel of the portal venous system (PVS), which drains the blood from the gastrointestinal tract, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen to the liver.
lesser omentum
the double layer of the peritoneum that extends from the liver to the lesser curvature of the stomach (hepatogastric ligament) and the first part of the duodenum (hepatoduodenal ligament).
omental foramen
also called foramen of Winslow, is the path of communication between the greater and lesser sac
subphrenic spaces
are spaces that lie between the diaphragm and the liver on each side of the falciform ligament
right posterior subphrenic space (pouch of morrison)
lies between the right lobe of the liver, the right kidney, and the right colic flexure
direction of flow in the peritoneal fluid
1) normal flow upward to the subphrenic spaces
2) flow of exudate in peritonitis
3) two sites where inflammatory exudate tends to collects when the patient is nursed in the supine position
4) accumulation of inflammatory exudate in the pelvis when in an inclined position
boundaries of the lesser sac
anteriorly: hepatoduodenal ligament, which contains hepatic vein, hepatic artery proper, and the common bile duct
posteriorly: IVC, right crus of the diaphragm, covered with parietal peritoneum anteriorly
superiorly: left lobe of the liver
inferiorly: first or superior part of duodenum
peritoneal recesses
small pouches or pockets of peritoneal cavity enclosed by specific peritoneal folds
