Peripheral Vascular System Flashcards
What is the purpose of venous flow (Veins)?
Drain deoxygenated blood and waste products
What mechanisms control venous flow?
- Inspiration
- Skeletal muscle pressure
- Intraluminal valves
Peripheral vascular disease is caused by:
- Immobility
- Hypercoagulation (trauma)
- Incompetent valves
What results from PVD?
Venous stasis
- edema
- red color,
- chronic aching
- Bacterial invasion
What causes Peripheral Artery disease (PAD)?
- Arteriosclerosis
- Embolism
- Trauma to artery
What results from PAD?
Ischemia
- pain after movement
- Pallor/coolness
- tissue death
- Thin, shiny, hairless skin
What subjective data do you collect when assessing vascular system?
- Leg pain/cramps
- Skin changes
- Swelling
- Medications (smoking)
When inspecting the arms, what objective data about pulses do you collect?
Assess amplitude of both radial pulses, simultaneously
- Assymetry of calves >1 cm
- Warmth
- Intense pain indicate:
Deep vein thrombosis (venous stasis)
What lower extremeties pulses should be assessed with suspected deficiencies?
- Popliteal pulse (circulation to leg)
- Posterior tibial pulse (circulation to foot)
- Dorsalis Pedis Pulse (circulation to foot)
If normal lower leg extremeties are not palpable, what pulse should you assess?
Femoral pulse
Edema that is rock hard is a sign of:
Lymphatic obstruction
Arteriosclerosis causes this condition:
Less pain, pallor, gangrene
Ischemic ulcer (arterial deficiency)
What is this condition: Painful, firm edema, brown discoloration, wet
Venous stasis ulcer (Vein deficiency)
