- Anterior to ear
- Posterior to ear
- Anterior= Preauricular
- Posterior= Posterior auricular (mastoid)
What are these lymph nodes?
1) Occipital
2) Submandibular

What do lymph nodes do?
Filter lymph and pathogens from body tissues
What subjective data would you collect about the head during a health history?
- Headaches
- Head injuries
- Dizziness
- Neck pain/ ROM
- Lumps
- History of surgery
What factors are more common among older adults?
What would you check regarding this?
Dizziness and Neck pain
- Does it affect daily activities?
When assessing the head, what objective data would you collect/look for?
The face?
Size, symmetry, and midline.
Face= Symmetry/proportion and no twitches with movement
What cranial nerve is responsible for:
Smiling, forwning, puffing cheeks, raising eyebrow, and closing eyes
Cranial nerve VII (facial)
What cranial nerve is responsible for:
clenching teeth/ sensations on eyelids
Cranial Nerve V (trigeminal)
When palpating the skull, what joint do you inspect?
Temporomandibular joint:
Palpate as they open mouth
What objective data of the neck would you collect?
- Symmetry
- ROM
- Lymph nodes
- Trachea
- Thyroid gland
If lymph nodes are palpable, what do you note?
Size, shape, and mobility
What cranial nerve is responsible for:
Shrugging shoulders and turning head
Cranial Nerve XI (spinal accessory)
When checking the trachea and thyroid gland what are you assessing for?
Trachea: Is it midline
Thyroid gland: Should not be visible; no lumps/bumps
What are some expected findings you would find in an aging adult but not young adults?
- Tremors
- Curve of neck
- Limited ROM of neck
- Sunken submandibular gland
What is this abnormality?
Hydrocephalus; buildup of CSF in ventricles
