What is expected objective data of the nose?
- Symmetrical/midline to face
- Same color as face
- No deformities/lesions
- patent nares
- No septal deviation
What are normal objective findings of the lips?
Pink
Moist
No cracking/lesions
What is an expected normal finding of the mouth of an older adult?
Less saliva production
What are normal objective findings of the teeth and gums?
- White teeth
- Pink gums
- Evenly spaced along gumline
- No pain
What are expected objective findings of the tongue?
Moist and smooth
Red tongue
No cracks/lesions
No white patches
What barriers are required when assessing the mouth?
What is also important to note?
Wear gloves
NEVER put hands directly in mouth
White patches on tongue/gumline could indicate:
Cancer
Candidiasis (fungal infection on tongue)
How can you tell if a white tongue is candidiasis and not just buildup?
When scraping the tongue, tongue will bleed if candidiasis
What are expected findings of the buccal mucosa?
Differences in darker skinned person?
Moist
Pink
No lesions
- Hyperpigmention in darker skinned person
What are normal abnormalities of the older adult for the gums?
Atrophic; gumlines recede
Teeth look larger
more ulcers
Natural tooth loss
What are normal abnormalilites of older adults for the tongue and chewing?
Tongue atrophy (smaller)
Deminished taste
Troubles chewing
What additional questions would you ask older adults during a health history?
Dryness in mouth?
Medications?
Loss of teeth?
Can they care for their teeth?
