Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) Flashcards
What does PVD mostly impact?
Arteries
Aside from arteries, what else can it impact?
Veins and lymph vessels
Thrombus?
stationary clot in vessel
Embolus?
Clot that moves from where it formed and lodges to another site
What are the 2 forms of PVD?
- Acute Arterial Occlusion
2. Atherosclerotic Occlusive Disease
Acute arterial occlusion?
It has an acute onset that disrupts perfusion
What is acute arterial occlusion usually due to?
Thrombus or embolus
What are the manifestations of Acute arterial occlusion?
The 7 P’s
- Pistol
- Pain
- Pallor
- Polar
- Parasthesia
- Pulselessness
- Paralysis
Briefly explain the manifestation for PVD:
- Pistol?
quickly, without warning
Briefly explain the manifestation for PVD:
- Pain?
ischemic pain
Briefly explain the manifestation for PVD:
- Pallor?
Area not adequately perfused [white/pale distal to obstruction]
Briefly explain the manifestation for PVD:
- Polar?
Cold because less blood to area and blood carries heat
Briefly explain the manifestation for PVD:
- Pulselessness?
No pulse
Briefly explain the manifestation for PVD:
- Paralysis?
Loss of function from decreased perfusion [no energy]
Briefly explain the manifestation for PVD:
- Parasthesia?
Abnormal sensations such as tingling, pins & needles
