Peripheral Vascular Assessment Flashcards
Arteries
Carry oxygenated blood from the heart to rest of the body (except pulmonary artery)
-high pressure
Veins
Carry unoxygenated blood from body back to the heart (except pulmonary vein)
- thin walls
- valves
- low pressure
Lymphatic System
- returns excess fluid from tissues back to vascular network
- works w/ immune system to fight infection
- maintains fluid and protein balance
6 P’s
- polar
- pain
- pulse
- pallor
- paresthesia
- paralysis
CWMS
- colour
- warmth
- movement
- strength
Raynaud Disease
-vasospatic disorder, tingling, numbness, pain starting from fingers
Peripheral Arterial Disease
Plaque build up in arteries limiting the flow of oxygenated blood (outer regions of the body)
Acute Arterial Occlusion
When blood flow to an artery stops (usually in legs)
Chronic Venous Insufficiency
Poor venous return due to ineffective valves (in the legs)
Deep Vein Thrombosis
Blood clot that forms in the veins (usually in legs)
Thrombophlebitis
Inflammatory process that causes a blood clot to form and block veins
Lymphedema
Localized fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system
