Peripheral Nervous System - Somatic Nervous System Flashcards
What makes up the peripheral nervous system?
All the nerves outside the central nervous system.
What is the function of the peripheral nervous system?
To replay nerve impulses from the central nervous system (the spinal chord and brain) to the rest o the body and from the body back to the central nervous system.
What are the two main divisions of the peripheral nervous system?
The somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system.
What is the somatic nervous system made up of?
12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves.
What are cranial nerves?
Nerves that emerge directly from the underside of the brain.
What are spinal nerves?
Nerves that emerge from the spinal chord.
What types of neutrons do the nerves that make up the somatic nervous system (cranial and spinal) have?
Motor and sensory neurons.
What do sensory neurons do?
Relay messages to the central nervous system (the brain and spinal chord).
What do motor neurons do?
Relay information from the central nervous system (brain and spinal chord) to other areas of the body.
What is the somatic nervous system involved in that does not involve the central nervous system?
Reflex actions, because it doesn’t involve the central nervous system the reflex can occur very quickly.
