Glands and Hormones - Endocrine Glands Flashcards
What do endocrine systems do?
Produce or secrete hormones.
What are hormones?
Chemical substances that regulate the activity of cells to
What are some of the major glands f the endocrine system?
The pituitary gland, adrenal glands and the reproductive organs (ovaries and testes).
What is an everyday example of something that can be compared to the regulation of the endocrine system?
By feedback similar to how a thermostat regulates temperature in a room.
What are the stages of the endocrine system at work - hypothalamus, pituitary gland example?
1 - A single is sent from the hypothalamus to the pituitary gland in the form of a ‘releasing hormone’.
2 - The pituitary gland secretes a ‘stimulating hormone’ into the bloodstream.
3 - This hormone signals the target gland (e.g. adrenal gland) to secrete its hormone.
4 - As levels of this hormone rises in the bloodstream, the hypothalamus shuts down secretion of the releasing hormone and the pituitary gland shuts down secretion of the stimulating hormone.
5 - This slows own secretion of the target glands hormone, resulting in stable concentrations of hormones circulating in the bloodstream.
