- IV
- blood sugar will be monitored pre and post op
- sedatives and pain meds
The nurse is developing a plan to teach a patient deep-breathing exercises to expand collapsed alveoli and prevent postoperative atelectasis and pneumonia. What are important steps?
Splint or support the incision to promote maximum comfort
Inhale slowly through the nostrils, exhale through pursed lips
Hold the breath for about five seconds to expand the alveoli
Repeat this breathing method 5–10 times hourly
What should happen before pre-op meds are given?
patient should void
Discharge Phase 1 Criteria
- patient is awake and oriented
- VS are baseline
- no excess bleeding/drainage
- O2 > 90%
- Pain managed
- N/V controlled
Ambulatory Surgery: Discharge Criteria
- no IV opioids in past 30 min
- voided if appropriate
- able to ambulate
- adult present to drive home
- written discharge instructions given
GI assessment
- delayed gastric emptying
- distention & flatulence
- hiccups
- N/V
- postop ileus
