A
The instrumentation of the crown surfaces (enamel / CEJ) and root surfaces to remove plaque, calculus and stains w/o removing tooth substance

whats root planing?
A
The removal of cementum and surface dentin that is often impregnated with calculus and contaminated toxins or microorganisms. When thoroughly done, some unavoidable tissue removal occurs.
Objective: to produce a smooth, hard and clean surface
