Periodontal Risk Flashcards
Risk assessment
probability of contracting disease
Risk Factor
increase likelihood of disease
causal chain -> disease occurrence
exposure before disease onset
SMOKING AND DIABETES
Odds Ratio
Way of comparing whether the probability of a certain event is the same for two groups
p(1-p)/q(1-p)
Risk Determinant
substitute term for risk factor
reserved for risk factors that cannot be modified
Risk Indicators
probable or putative risk factor
Identified in cross sectional studies and not yet confirmed in longitudinal
ex: microbiota = necessary but not sufficient to cause the disease
inflammation=necessary but not sufficient to cause disease
HIV
Osteoporosis
Risk Predictor
Associated with elecated risk for disease and may not be part of causal chain
in either longitudinal or cross sectional
useful to know who is at risk but not in identifiny glikely interventions
ex: BoP Remaining teeth previous history of periodontal disease calculus furcations
Prognostic Factor
Directly affects the probability of positive outcome when therapy is rendered
Ex: severity of diseasue
level of oral hygeine
infrequen dental visits
smoking
Etiology vs risk
etiologic factor- a variable contributing to the cause of the disease
risk assessment- a variable associated w/ increased chance of developing disease
