Chronic periodontitis Flashcards
Chronic periodontitis
Adults
Rate of progression is slow to moderate
• Rapid bursts of destruction can occur
Untreated have more progression
Symptoms of CD
- Mostly painless
- Localized dull pain
- Gingival tenderness, ‘itching’ gums
- Loose teeth
- Food impaction
- Drifted teeth/ increased spacing
- Root sensitivity
- Bleeding gums
Localized vs generalized
Localized
• 30% of sites
Severity of Chronic periodontitis
- Slight
- 1-2mm Aloss
- Moderate
- 3-4 mm Aloss
- Severe
- 5mm or more of Aloss
Risk factor
environmental, behavioral or biologic factors, which when present increase the likelihood that an individual will develop disease. • Longitudinal evidence • Intervention can modify risk factor o Smoking o Diabetes
Risk determinant:
non-modifiable factors
• Age
• Gender
Risk indicators:
putative risk factors that have been identified in
cross sectional studies but not confirmed longitudinally
• HIV/AIDS
• Osteoporosis
• Infrequent dental visits
Risk markers/predictors
A characteristic associated with elevated risk for disease but may not be part of the causal chain
• Furcation involvement
• Calculus
• History of attachment loss
What percent of americans have periodontitis?
> 47% of US population has periodontitis
o ~65 million people
Critical probing depth (Lindhe)
probe depths less than which root planing will
cause attachment loss (2.9mm)
