Periodontal Indices Flashcards
Assessment of inflammation
Color Texture Edema Plaque Bleeding Exudate
Plaque Index
Amount of plaque at the gingival margin, examing following areas:
distofacial papilla, facial margin, mesiofacial papilla, and lingual gingival margin
Scores from 0-3
Use a probe to distinguish between 0 and 1
Visible plaque is scored a 2 or 3
Assesses thickness of plaque not how much it covers tooth
Subjective for thickness and requires trained person
Loe and stillness
O’Leary Plaque Index
Percentage of tooth surfaces positive for plaque
NIDR Calculus Index
0- calculus is absent
1- supragingival calculus but no subgingival calculus is present
2- supra and sub or only sub
Gingival Index
Severity of Inflammation is assessed in the following areas:
distofacial papilla, facial margin, mesiofacial papilla, and lingual gingival margin.
Scores 0-3
Bleeding makes it at least a 2
Score for tooth subject and population
Useful for the calculation of prevalence and severity in population and individual. Often used in clinical trials.
Loe and stillness
Periodontal Screening and Recording (PSR)
Purpose: rapid and effective way to screen for dissease
0-4
0- Colored area visible and no BOP and no Calc or defective margins
1- Colored area visible and BOP but no calculus or defective margins
3- colored area visible with either BOP or not but has calculus or defective margins
4- Colored area partially visible with other two ones optional
5- Colored area not visible with other two ones optional
Sextants
Benefits and limitations of
PSR
Benefits
High sensitivity and fast and easy
Cost effective and easy recording
Limitations
Used to detect disease but dont use it to replace screening
If patient has been treated they need comprehensive exams
Use for adults
Halo effect
Examiners impression of target distors her or her percepton of the target
Central Tendency Error
The examiner rates extremes so end result is near the middle
