Periodisation
Dividing the training year into specific sections for a specific purpose
Three cycles of periodisation
Macrocycle, mesocycle and micro cycle
Macrocycle
Long term planning phase with three periods
Preparation phase
Involves general conditioning and the development of fitness
Competitive period
Where the performer develops skills and techniques whilst maintaining fitness.
Transition period
The rest and recovery stage that allows the competitor to physically and mentally prepare for the competition without injury
Mesocycle
A 4-12 week period with a focus on developing a component of fitness
Microcycle
Planning for a week, a few days or a session. It is repeated throughout the length of the mesocycle.
Tapering
Reducing the volume or intensity of training before the competition
Peaking
Planning training sessions so that the competitor is at their peak before a major competition.
