Periodic Table Flashcards
What is an element ?
It’s a substance in which all the atoms are exactly the same.
Are there more metals or non-metals on the periodic table ?
There are more metals
What can all the elements on our planet be split up into ?
Metals and non-metals
What are the characteristic physical properties of a metal ?
They’re solid at room temp, remain solid when heated gently, clean elements are shiny, silver and malleable they conduct electricity.
How do you test the physical properties of something Metal/Non-metal ?
Electricity - doesn’t conduct, Bunsen burner- liquid at room temp, appearance- dull not silver , brittle.
What is the definition of allotropy ?
This is where the atoms of the elements can be put together in different ways, creating different forms of the element.
Describe in brief allotropes of white tin and grey tin ?
White tin is a shiny malleable metal and grey tin is a non-metallic and brittle substance.
Describe in brief allotropes of carbon ?
Diamond is super-hard, transparent and a precious mineral and graphite is a slippery grey solid which conducts electricity.
What is the unusual property of copper ?
Copper is a metal but it’s bronze.
What is the unusual property of Carbon (graphite)?
It’s a nonmetal but conducts electricity.
What is the unusual property of silicon ?
It’s a nonmetal, but it’s shiny
What is the unusual property of lead ?
It’s a metal, but it has a low melting point.
What is the unusual property of bromine ?
It’s a nonmetal, but it’s a liquid at room temperature.
What is the unusual property of mercury ?
It’s a metal but it is a liquid at room temperature.
What are the Chemical properties of oxides of metals and nonmetals have that allow us to tell them apart ?
Metals - Soluble turn universal indicator solution, green/blue/purple. (They are alkaline).
Nonmetals - Soluble oxides of nonmetals turn universal indicator solution, red/orange. (They are acidic acidic).
What is the experiment for chemical testing of elements?
You would mix the substance with distilled water and then put a dew drops of UI in to it and you can see if it’s alkaline or acidic.
What does a nonmetal show?
A range of properties.
