Periodic Table Flashcards
Periods on the table go in which direction
Left to Right/ Across
Groups go in which direction
Up and down
What does the Peroid Represent on the table
The number of elements electron shell that is being filled.
Exp
Period 1 only the first shell is being filled.
Period 5 has 5 electron shells
The group number represents what?
Number of electrons in the outter shell.
But with out the 1 infront of it.
Exp
Group 14 contains 4 in the outter shell
Trend from left to right across a period.
Change from metals to non-metals
Decrease in atomic radius
Increase in electronegativity
What is electronegativity
A more electronegative atom will “share” the electron in a covalent bond more than the other one, causing a slightly negative charge
Trends down a group
Elements become more metallic
Increase in atomic radius (electron shells)
Metals react by….
Non metals react by….
Metals react by losing electrons
Non metals react by gaining electrons
Group 1 on the left hand side are
What do they have in common?
Alkali metals
Only 1 electron in the outter shell
Group 17
What do they have in common
Halogens
All have 7 electrons in their outter shell.
They want to gain an electron
Group 18
What kind of elements
What do they have in common
Nobel gasses
All have filled valance shells
They arent easily exchaning electrons
Which side of the periodic table is more electronegative?
The Right side. Non metals
What are representive elements
The elements within the first two families (Groups I and II on the far left) and the last six families or groups (on the right) of the Periodic Table
Why are representive elements called this.
Because they are true to the general properties expected of the group they belong to; this is because the representative elements of a group exhibit similar electron configurations, with the same number of electrons in their valence shell.Sep 22, 2021
What keeps the Protons from repelling against one another and out of the nucleus
Strong nuclear force
