Q

what is the Qing Dynasty?

A

The last imperial dynasty of China, preceded by the Ming Dynasty and succeeded by the People’s Republic of China (Mao Zedong). During the Qing dynasty, dramatic expansion was made possible by use of gunpowder/cannons and formed the territorial base for the modern Chinese state. China’s borders expanded to include Taiwan, Tibet, Central Asia, Manchuria, and Mongolia. The Qing were largely tolerant of their diverse subjects’ cultures, they used local natives to rule over newly conquered regions, and they did not try to assimilate them into Chinese culture. Founded in 1644 by Manchu rulers who invaded from the north, the Qing dynasty ruled China for more than 260 years, until 1912, when the last emperor was overthrown, a weak republic formed, and China descended into a period of civil war.

Q

Mughal Emprie

A

Muslim state exercising dominion over most of India in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (1526-1857). The Mughals ruled over a predominantly Hindu population. Mughal rulers, for the most part, were religiously tolerant – Akbar the Great is best known for his tolerance as he ended the jizya and other taxes on non-Muslims and allowed Hindus to serve in his government. The Mughal Empire facilitated the blending of Indian, Muslim, and Persian cultures, as exhibited by the syncretic architectural influences in the famed Taj Mahal. The Mughal Empire began to decline in the 1700s as it faced internal opposition from Hindu forces such as the Marathas, and the growing power of the British East India company. After the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British government took direct control over India.
