A substance that can be taken in a variety of ways to produce expected and welcome physical and/or physiological effects
Why?

Anabolic steroids
Drugs that mimic the male sex hormone testosterone and promote bone and muscle growth.
Benefits - used to enhance performance. Increases development of bones growth. Train harder and recover quicker.
Side effects - increased risk of muscle injury. Increases risk of heart attacks and strokes
Beta Blockers
Drugs that are used to control the heart rate and have a calming effect.
Benefits - helps target sports where readiness and precision are required, reduces heart rate
Side effects - nausea, diarrhoea, tiredness, depression
Narcotics and analgesics
Narcotics - drugs that affect mood or behaviour, relieve pain
Analgesics - drugs that elevate the rate of urine production
Benefits - act by depressing the central nervous system and give relief from painful injuries
Side effects - loss of co-ordination, loss of balance, loss of concentration
Diuretics
Drugs that elevate the rate of urine production
Peptide hormones
Increases the rate of maturation of red blood cells.
Benefits - increases muscle growth, assist in recovery from injury and heavy training.
Side effects - blood becomes thicker, which makes it more difficult to pass through the small capillaries
Growth Hormones
Is used to increase their muscle development.
Benefits - increase muscle growth
Side effects - minimal side effects, can be detected by a blood test and not in your urine
Stimulants
Drugs that have an effect on the central nervous system.
Benefits - increases alertness, enabling people to think more by stimulating the central nervous system.
Side effects - insomnia, irregular heart beat, high blood pressure and addiction
Blood Doping
Banned process - not a banned drug.
Involves boosting the number of red blood cells in the bloodstream in order to improve your performance.
Increases your endurance.
