PEREOSTEAL REACTION. Flashcards
What is the periosteum ?
A layer of connective tissue around the bone.
How does periosteal reaction occur ?
Fractures can lead to periosteal elevation.
How is the periosteum attached to the bone ?
Connective tissue extends into the bone called Sharpey’s fibres.
What is the inner layer of the periosteum for ?
Has a high level of Osteogenic cells.
When there is a fracture what are the Osteogenic cells triggered to do ?
They are triggered to form Osteoblasts to form new bone.
what is Hypertrophic Pulmonary arthropathy ?
This is the production of new bone along the shafts of bone. It is associated with people with chronic lung disease like cystic fibrosis.
List 6 causes of a solid periosteal reaction.
1 infection
2 benign neoplasms
3 osteoid osteoma
4 eosinophilic granuloma
5 hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy
6 deep venous thrombosis (lower extremity)
