What is an insufficiency fracture ?
A type of stress fracture.
How is an insufficiency fracture caused ?
Normal stresses on abnormal bone.
What disease processes are insufficiency fractures usually associated with ?
Osteoporosis and Vitamin D deficiency.
Where do insufficiency fractures usually occur ?
Pelvis and Spine.
Name 3 main differences between an insufficiency fracture and a stress fracture ?
1 Stress fractures occur on normal bone and insufficiency fractures occur on weakened bone.
2 Insufficiency fractures usually occur in older patients.
3 Insufficiency fractures usually occur in postmenopausal women and individuals with a compromised bone conditions e.g. pagets and hyperparathyroidism.
