MICROSCOPIC ANATOMY OF THE BONE Flashcards
To understand the bony anatomy at a microscopic level.
What is the most superficial layer of the bone ?
This is the periosteum.
What is the periosteum ?
This is a layer of connective tissue which contains blood vessels and nerves.
What connects the periosteum to the bone ?
Sharpey’s fibres - These are strong collagen based fibres.
What is the cortical bone made up of ?
Tightly packed dense Osteons.
Cortical bone is made up of osteons which form concentric rings, What are these rings called ?
Lamella.
What does the lamella surround ?
They surround harversian canals.
What does the haversian canal supply to the bone.
Vascular and nervous supply.
What is between each osteon ?
Volkmann’s canal
What does Volkmann’s canal provide ?
These canals assist with blood supply.
What is the inner layer of bone called ?
Cancellous trabeculae spongy bone.
What is the cancellous bone made up of ?
Interconnected plates called trabeculae with blood supply interwoven between the plates.
