Perceptual Classification Scheme for Adult Dysarthria (extra document) Flashcards
Name the dysarthria:
General picture is one of muscle weakness and/or paralysis, hypotonia, muscle atrophy, fasciculation. Results from LMN lesion to any or all of the cranial nerves subserving muscles of speech (CN V, VII, IX, X, XI, XII)
Flaccid Dysarthria
Name the dysarthria:
Bilateral UMN Lesion. Picture is one of paresis, and hyperreflexia in any or all of the speech subsystems.
Spastic Dysarthria (UMN)
Name the dysarthria:
Associated with bilateral cerebellar lesions. Picture is one of inaccuracy of movement, slowness of movement, and hypotonia. Timing is arrhythmic.
Ataxic Dysarthria
Name the dysarthria:
Characterized by rigidity, tremor at rest, paucity of movement, slowness, limited range of movement, and limited force of muscle contraction. Neurological damage of portions of basal ganglia (substantia nigra)
Hypokinetic Dysarthria (Parkinson’s Disease)
Name the dysarthria:
Referred to as the slow type. Picture is one of muscle contraction that build up slow producing a distorted posture. Muscles of head, neck, trunk, and proximal limbs typically involved. May be focal or generalized. Basal ganglia damage
Hyperkinetic Dysarthria (Dystonia)
Name the dysarthria:
Referred to as quick hyperkinesia. Picture is one of random, unrestrained, rapid, irregular movements. Hypotonia and incoordination. Pattern of clusters is complex.
Hyperkinetic Dysarthria (Chorea)
Name that dysarthria:
One of the dysarthria that is a mixture of lesions. Can be ssen in patients with ALS (Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis) Known for prolonged intervals, prolonged phonemes, and inappropriate silences
Flaccid-spastic Dysarthria
A mixture dysarthria that is seen in patients with MS (Multiple Sclerosis)
Spastic-Ataxic Dysarthria
A mild version of Dysarthria that is said to have mild articulatory imprecision and irregular articulatory breakdown/incoordination
Unilateral UMN Dysarthria
The phonatory features of Flaccid Dysarthria are:
Breathy voice, audible inspiration, short phrases, diplophonia
The articulatory/resonatory features of Flaccid Dysarthria are:
Hypernasality, nasal emission, imprecise consonants, short phrases
The prosodic features of Flaccid Dysarthria:
Monopitch, monoloudness, harsh voice
The prosodic features of Spastic Dysarthria:
monopitch, monoloudness, reduced stress, short phrases, slow rate of speech, and execess/equal stress
The articulatory/resonatory features of Dysarthria:
imprecise consonants, vowel distorted, hypernasality
Articulatory features of Ataxic Dysarthria:
imprecises consonants, irregular articulatory breakdowns, vowel distortions
