Lagos is located on the south coast of Nigeria and Nigeria is located in West Africs
What is the estimated population of Nigeria?
It was estimated to be 13.6 million by the UN but it could be up to 22 million
What is the influence of Lagos within the region of West Africa?
- 90% of all sea port activities in Nigeria happens in Lagos, this stimulates regional industry.
- Growth rate of 4% per year. 40% due to rural-urban migration
- Lagos is the major ICT Hub of West Africa
What is the influence of Lagos within Nigeria?
- Lagos makes 25% of Nigeria’s GDP
- It is a cutlural hub - NAtional museum of Nigeria, Christs Cathedral, Oba Palace
- University of Lagos is 2nd best in the country
- Until 1991 Lagos was the federal capital of Nigeria
What is the influence of Lagos within the world?
- It is the home of Nollywood
- There are 7 million passengers a year through its airport
- It is a beta + city
- Lagos has one of the largest and buisiest ports in Africa
What is the influence of migration on Lagos?
- Migration brings a range of new cultures, food and workers to a city which can chane the character
- In 1950 Lagos was primarily contained on Lagos island (also called Victoria Island). It has now grown more than 50km inland.
- Without adequate infrastructure migration can lead to congestion and increased pollution as is the case with Lagos
- Migration can also bring wealth and overseas investment and could provide the government with the funds to increase housing provision
What is the dominant ethnic group in Nigeria?
- Yoruba but there are 250 different ethnic groups. Many international citezens

What are the causes of the Housing problems?
- 6000 homes built from 2008-2011 but 2000 people move in per day
- 69% of home are for low income families but still unaffordable for most
What are the effects of the Housing problems?
- Formation of slums like Makoko (approx. 250,000 people)
- Lack of secure tenure: only 7% of those renting in Makoko have legal title of ownership. July 2012: Govt bulldozed 3000 people’s homes
What are the causes of transport problems?
- No city wide rail system
- Only 3 bridges from the mainland to Victoria Island
- 2000 people per day move to Lagos. 27,000 new vehicles were registered officially in 1995. 2010 = 230,000.
- Fuel subsidy = cheap petrol (only $2.75 a gallon)
- 755 of Nigeria’s imports come through Lagos’ ports
What are the effects of the housing problems?
- 2016: Lagos named as one of the world’s most air polluted cities.
- Armed robbers steal from stationary cars
- Hours long traffic jams or ‘Go Slows’ are common place
What are the causes of waste problems?
- 10,000 metric tonnes of waste a day
- 12 % of the waste is plastic as no clean tap water = 60 million bottles of water per day
- Only 40% of rubbish collected by the state government
What are the effects of waste problems in Nigeria?
- Death of fish in the lagoon due to pollution of waterways
- 28 landfill sites around the lagoon that leach into the water
- Health impacts on residents in places like Makoko
