What is the influence of migration on Lagos?

A
  • Migration brings a range of new cultures, food and workers to a city which can chane the character
  • In 1950 Lagos was primarily contained on Lagos island (also called Victoria Island). It has now grown more than 50km inland.
  • Without adequate infrastructure migration can lead to congestion and increased pollution as is the case with Lagos
  • Migration can also bring wealth and overseas investment and could provide the government with the funds to increase housing provision

  • Social: Focus on low income areas like Makoko
  • Environmental: Solar panels, recycles organic waste and harvest rainwater. Floating so will adapt to rising seas
  • Economic: Relatively cheap option
  • Negative: Only a prototype (school built but no houses). Needs funding

A
  • Social: Can build much quicker than normal houses. So housing need met quicker
  • Environmental: Recycles old containers
  • Economic: 30% cheaper than using concrete. At £7000 for a 2 bed it is much more affordable for a Lagosian
  • Negatives: Only a small company – small scale solution
