Q

Where is the Iliac Crest?

A

The long superior edge of the ilium.
Begins at the ASIS and extends around the side of the torso to the end of the posterior superior iliac spine (PSIS).
Each crest is superficial and easily palpable.

Q

Where is the Anterior Superior Iliac Spine (ASIS)?

A

Located on the anterior and superior aspect of the ilium.

Both ASIS are the superficial tips located below the waistline.

Q

Where is the Posterior Superior Iliac Spine (PSIS)?

A

Located at the posterior end of the iliac crest.

Can be visibly identified by the two small dimples found at the base of the low back.

Q

Where is the Pubic Crest?

A

Located directly inferior to the navel and superior to the genitals.
Formed by the superior, medial edge of both pubic bones.
Horizontal crest, roughly two inches wide and clearly palpable.

Q

Where is the Ischial Tuberosity?

A

The “SIT BONES” are located on the most inferior aspect of the pelvis at the level of the gluteal fold (horizontal crease between the buttocks and thigh).

Q

Where is the Anterior Inferior Iliac Spine?

A

Located inferior and medial to the ASIS.
Deep to the sartorius muscle and inguinal ligament.
Can be difficult to distinguish.

Q

Where is the Iliac Fossa?

A

Bowl-shaped iliac fossa is located on the medial surface of the ilium.
Presence of the iliacus and the abdominal contents make the majority of the fossa inaccessible.
Sink your fingers slowly over the iliac crest and into the fossa to palpate it.

Q

Where is the Sacrum?

A

Large, triangular bone at the inferior end of the vertebral column.
Situated between the overhanging sides of the pelvis.
Made up of four vertebrae that are fused together.

Q

Where are the Medial Sacral Crest?

A

Running down the center of the sacrum.
Composed of three to four points.
Lateral Sacral Crest on either side of the medial sacral crest.
Smaller series of bony knobs.

Q

Where is the Edge of the Sacrum?

A

Part of the attachment site for the gluteus maximus and the sacrotuberous ligament.
Sacrum’s bumpy surface lies deep to the thoracolumbar aponeurosis and sacroiliac ligaments, but still easily accessible.

Q

Where is the Coccyx?

A

Located at the top of the gluteal cleft and attaches to the end of the sacrum.
Composed of three of four fused bones.
Segmented bumpy contour, can be an inch or more in length.
Its tip may curve in toward the body or veer slightly to the left or right.

Q

Where is the Sacroiliac Joint?

A

The junction between the sacrum and the ilium. Located medial to the PSIS and is deep to the thoracolumbar aponeurosis and posterior sacroiliac ligaments.
Overhangs the sacroiliac joint, leaving only the edge accessible.

Q

Where is the Umbilicus?

A

(Navel) can be felt at the midline of the body superior to the the level of ASISs.

Q

Where is the Pubic Crest and Tubercles?

A

Pubic tubercles are located on the superior aspect of the pubic crest.
Each tubercle is shaped like a small horn.
Tubercles might be one to two inches apart and are not always easy to palpate.

16
Q

Where is the Superior Ramus of the Pubis?

A

spans 45 degrees from the pubic tubercle toward the AIIS.
Deep to the inguinal ligament and neurovascular bundle.
Superior ramus can be challenging to palpate.

17
Q

Where are the Inferior Ramus of the Pubis and Ramus of the Ischium?

A

The two rami are located long the inferior aspect of the pelvis and together form a bridge between the pubic crest and the ischial tuberosity.
The angle formed by the rami will be wider on females than males.
