Head, Neck and Face Flashcards
Where is the External Occipital Protuberance located?
Small, superficial point located along the back of the head at the center of the occiput.
Where is the Occiput located?
Posterior and inferior aspects of the cranium.
Extends superiorly from the external occipital protuberance and laterally to the mastoid processes of the temporal bones.
Where are the Superior Nuchal Lines located?
Along either side of the occipital protuberance.
Faint, sometimes bumpy ridges which extend laterally to the mastoid processes.
Where are the Parietal Bones located?
Form the top and sides of the cranium.
Positioned between the frontal, occipital and temporal bones.
Saucer shaped.
Extend anteriorly to the level of the ear canal.
Merge at the body’s midline to form the SAGITTAL SUTURE.
Where is the temporal bone located? And where are its 3 important bony landmarks (mastoid process, zygomatic arch, and styloid process)
Temporal bone is located on the side of the head, encompassing the area around the ear.
Mastoid Process forms a large, superficial bump directly behind the earlobe.
Zygomatic Arch is formed by the temporal and zygomatic bones.
Styloid Process is located behind the earlobe between the mastoid process and the posterior edge of the mandible.
Where is the Frontal Bone located?
Located on the anterior aspect of the cranium, the broad frontal bones forms the forehead and upper rim of the eye sockets.
Where is the Sphenoid Bone located?
The sphenoid bone is located inside the cranium.
Behind the eyeballs and superior to the zygomatic arches, the sphenoid is shaped like a butterfly, and its lateral portions are called the greater wings.
Locate the following Facial Bones: Nasal, Zygomatic, and Maxilla.
Nasal: located at the bridge of the nose, small nasal bones are positioned between the frontal and maxillary bones, virtually indistinguishable from them.
Zygomatic: (cheekbones) forms the anterior aspect of the zygomatic arch and the lateral portion of the orbit of the eye.
Maxilla: maxillary bones form the center of the face, the inferior portion of the orbit of the eye, surface around the nose, and the upper jaw in which the upper row of teeth articulate.
