Mandible Flashcards
Where is the base of the Mandible located?
Base or “jaw line” is the edge of the body and an attachment site for the thin platysma muscle.
Where is the body of the Mandible located?
Flat surface of the mandible inferior to the lower teeth.
Where is the Submandibular Fossa located?
located on the underside of the mandible and is an attachment site for the suprahyoid muscles.
Where is the Angle located?
Located at the posterior end of the base.
Forms part of the attachment for the masseter.
Where is the Ramus located?
The flat ramus is the posterior, vertical portion of the mandible and is deep to the masseter.
Where is the condyle located?
located just anterior to the ear canal and inferior to the zygomatic arch.
Deeper, inaccessible head of the condyle forms the articulating surface of the mandible at the temporomandibular (TM) joint.
Where is the Coronoid Process located?
located an inch anterior to the condyle of the mandible and is the attachment site of the temporalis muscle.
When jaw is closed, the coronoid process lies underneath zygomatic arch and is inaccessible.
Opening mouth will bring coronoid process out from under arch and allow the process to be accessed.
Where is the trachea located?
Trachea (windpipe) is located at the center of the anterior neck.
Ribbed, cartilaginous tube that is roughly an inch in diameter and deep to the thyroid gland.
Where is the Cricoid Cartilage located?
Slightly larger ring of the trachea superior to the thyroid gland.
Where is the Thyroid Cartilage located?
(Adam’s apple) is superior to the cricoid cartilage below the level of the chin.
Present in both sexes, larger and more visibly protruding on adult males.
Where is the Hyoid Bone located?
Horse-shoe hyoid bone is located superior to the thyroid cartilage.
Roughly an inch in diameter and lies parallel to the base of the mandible and the third or fourth cervicle vertebrea.
