Pelvic Inflammatory Disease Flashcards
what is pelvic inflammatory disease
Inflammation of the upper female genital tract
Progressive process beginning at lower genial tract
what are the three pathways for pelvic inflammatory disease
- Spread of bacterial infection
- Spread of gonorrhea
- Spread through blood via circulatory system
what are lab findings associated with PID
- elevated WBC in blood or vagina secretions
- high erythrocyte sedimentation
- Elevated C-reactive protein
- Positive gonorrhea and chlamydia
- Positive bacterial vaginosis
PID clinical findings
- Lower abdomen/pelvic pain
- Fever
- Increased WBC
- Mucopurulent cervical discharge
what is stage one of PID
Endometritis
what is stage two of PID
Salpingitis
What is stage three of PID
Tuboovarian complex or tuboovrian abscess
what is the final stage of PID
Chronic disease
Stage 1 Endometritis
Mildly enlarged uterus
- blurring of myometrial/endometrial junction
- Indistinct pelvic organ borders
what is the appearance of endometrium in endometritis
- Thickened
- Heterogenous
- contain fluid
what are the fallopian changes in acute PID
-Thickened edematous wall 5 mm
Pyosalpinx
Dilated tubal structure due to septa
Salpingitis
Second stage of PID
Tuboovarian Complex
Escape of purulent exudate outside tube
Ovary may become involved due to bacterial infiltration
Tube and ovaries are adherent to one another
Individual architecture is still identifiable on ultrasound
Tuboovarian abscess
Ovary/tube adherent
Ovarian parenchyma is affected
Unable to separate organs
Chronic SID sonographic finding
Hydrosalpinx
