sensorimotor (piaget)
birth-2 years
understands the world through sense and actions
TEACH ONLY IN PRESENT, just tell them, don’t understand play, tell them as it is happening
** no such thing as preop teaching at this age… only for parents/guardian **
pre operational (piaget)
3-6 years
understands the world through language and mental images
FANTASY ORIENTED, IMAGINATIVE, ILLOGICAL … thinking obeys no rules
they understand future and past
preop teaching: 2 hours before, morning of, day of procedure… don’t give them a whole lot of time to imagine… teach future tense… learn by playing
concrete operational (piaget)
7-11 years
understands the world through logical thinking and categories
“7/11 grocery stores are surrounded by concrete” - no trees, no flowers
children in this age group are rule oriented live and die by rules and cannot abstract… one way of doing things
- teach them a day/two ahead
- teach what you’re doing and skills
- age appropriate reading and demonstration (skills)
formal operational (piaget)
12 -15
understands the world through hypothetical thinking and scientific reasoning
- can abstract and think cause and effect
- as soon as child is 12, teach like an adult reg med-surg q
- can make decisions kind of lol
manage vs complete a skill
manage - 12 and up
skill 8 and up ?? gotta double check skill age
four phases of nurse-client relationship
pre-interaction phase: professional goals
orientation phase: purpose, nature, time, trust
working phase: active problem solving
termination phase: achieved goals, ended relationship
psych pt asks “What do you think I should do?”
DON’T GIVE ADVICE
reply by asking the same question back
pt won’t be able to blame you in the future even if things work in their favor
7 principles to obey w psych
- know phase of nurse-pt relationship
- don’t give/accept gifts
- don’t give advice
- never give guarantees
- immediacy pick the answe that will keep pt talking, don’t refer to someone
- concreteness psych pts take you LITERALLY, don’t use slang, don’t use figure of speech
- empathy nurse accepting pts feelings

NEVER PICK AN ANSWER “don’t you worry” “you shouldn’t feel…” “anybody would feel…” “I know how you feel…”
EMPATHY Q WILL ALWAYS HAVE A QUOTE
- role play feelings
- ask yourself how you would feel if I said these words
- choose the answer that reflects the pt’s feeling
