Pediatrics Flashcards
Jejunoileal atresia has differing presentations dependent upon the level of obstruction. How does it prevent with proximal obstruction vs distal obstruction?
Proximal obstruction: abdominal distention is less frequent, but bilious emesis is usually present
Distal obstruction: abdominal distention usually present
The cause of jejunoileal atresia is
An intrauterine focal mesenteric vascular accident
–jejunoileal atresia IS NOT associated with other abnormalities. The one exception is cystic fibrosis
What does AXR reveal for jejunoileal atresia:
Air-fluid levels with absent distal gas
Why is preoperative barium enema useful in jejunoileal atresia
It may be useful to exclude multiple atresias, which may be present in 10-15% of cases
The treatment of jejunoileal atresia is
To reestablish intestinal continuity. It is imperative to preserve as much intestinal length as possible
Treatment of an infantile hemangioma is
Observation
–most resolve by age 7-8
