Pediatric Sensory Flashcards
Compared to adult, peds eustachian tubes are ________ and ______, making them more susceptible to middle ear infections.
-Shorter
- Wider
Irritability, drainage, pain with swallowing, and fever may lead to what? (Two things- One causes the other)
- Decreased oral intake and dehydration
What should you do after instilling antibiotic eardrops for a child with otitis media?
Massage the anterior area of the ear.
Why is secondhand smoke a risk factor for recurrent otitis media?
It promotes adherence of respiratory pathogens to the lining of the middle ear and prolongs inflammation. This impedes drainage from the ear.
How can you prevent recurrence of otitis externa (swimmer’s ear)?
Instill drops of diluted alcohol to promote drying and to kill bacteria.
If a 4 month old has otitis media and is running a 101 degree fever, which would you give first- Ibuprofen or Amoxicillin?
- Amoxicillin (Fix root problem first)
If a 4 month old has otitis media and is running a 101 degree fever, which would you do first- Redress them in cooler clothing, cool compresses, or admin antipyretic?
- Antipyretic
Name two things you can teach parents to prevent ear infections.
- Wear ear plugs when swimming to prevent water getting into the ear.
- Do not allow the child to blow their nose immediately after surgery for tubes. This will cause more pain because of pressure increase.
Damage to the hair cells in the cochlea causes sensorineural hearing loss. Why are cochlear implants used for this?
The implants directly stimulate nerve fibers in the cochlea instead of needing the hair cells.
What should you include in a plan of care for a child with temporary vision loss- Have an AP feed them, have them walk with a cane, explain sounds that they are hearing?
- Explain sounds.
- They should be oriented to their location and encouraged to do self-caring activities as much as possible, such as eating.
- Consistency in their environment promotes safety and security. Reassurance will boost self-confidence.
- A cane would be for a child who has long-term hearing loss and knows how to use one.
You suspect a 6 month old infant might have visual disturbance because he is not interested in his brightly colored mobile. How would you test this theory?
- Move a brightly colored toy from side to side in front of the infant’s face. Assess whether or not the infant fixates on and tracks the toy.
