Pediatric Infection Flashcards
What will CRP test for?
-Inflammation/Immune system activity. (You know what this is)
- Does help test for autoimmune rxn, but primarily bacterial infx
-Active bacterial infx will have significantly higher values.
Area on the skin that feels itchy is called..
- Pruritus
Match the term to the description
- Macules -Raised bumps
-Papules -Flat and discolored
- Papules are raised
-Macules are flat
What would maculopapular mean?
The rash is a combination of both flat and raised lesions.
What kind of precautions do you need for Rubella?
Droplet
A rash appears on a kid and starts from their face- then spreads from HEAD TO TOE. Then it disappears in the same order that it spread. It’s maculopapular and mildly pruritic. Little bit of malaise, mild fever, URI symptoms. What is it?
- Rubella (German Measles)
- Think German soldiers appearing and disappearing in an orderly fashion when marching.
Which isolation group is this pneumonic for? What do they stand for?
SPIDERMAN
Droplet
Scarlet fever, strep
Pertussis, pneumonia
Influenza
Diptheria
Epiglottitis, Erythema infectiosum
Rubella (The germans and DROP them bombs)
Mumps
AN= Adenovirus
MTV- Which isolation method is this pneumonic for? What does it stand for?
Airborne. (MTV on the air)
Measles (Rubeola)
Tuberculosis
Varicella
German measles are caused by which virus? How does it spread?
-Rubella virus.
-DROPlets–> Mostly nasopharyngeal droplets, but also urine, blood, stool. (Germans drop them bombs). 7 days after rash onset.
Rubeola is caused by? How does it spread?
-Measles virus.
-Airborne until 4 days after rash onset. HIGHLY contagious
What symptoms do you see during the prodromal phase of the illness?
Non-specific, mild symptoms like malaise, fever, fatigue, weakness, etc. (Incubation period, Prodromal, Illness)
Other than the rash, which appears first, what other symptoms would you have with Rubella, German Measles?
URI s/s, mild fever, malaise.
What would you see during Rubeola’s (Measles) prodromal phase? What kind of rash will follow?
-Fever, cough, conjunctivitis
-Koplik spots on mucosal membranes- Mainly buccal mucosa. Lesions that look like a blue-ish white grain of rice in the center with a red ring surrounding it.
What kind of rash will you see appear last in Rubeola?
-Erythematous maculopapular rash 3-4 days post-prodromal. Progresses from head down and outward. Doesn’t disappear backward like German Measles. Just a reminder…. It’s highly contagious (Airborne)
Which Exanthem disease rash appears in 3 stages, beginning with a erythematous flushing/”slapped cheek” appearance?
Erythema Infectiosum (5th disease)
Where does the rash of Erythema Infectiosum disease progress to following the cheeks?
2nd = Trunk
3rd= Moves peripherally. Maculopapular and pruritic
What virus causes Erythema Infectiosum?
Human parvovirus
Exanthem Subitum (6th disease) is caused by?
Herpes virus
Characteristics of Exanthem Subitum rash?
Pinkish-red, flat or raised spots that blanch when touched
Key symptom of Exanthem Subitum prior to rash onst?
High fever (101- 106) lasting for 3-5 days
Precaution type for Exanthem Subitum, AKA roseola infantum?
Standard ** Only one that has this
Precautions for varicella? (Hint: There are two- One is MTV)
Airborne and Contact for 5 days after rash onset
When can a child that has had infx of Varicella return to school?
After lesions have crusted
Where do varicella lesions first appear?
Scalp, face, trunk, then extremities. Erythematous macules that eventually evolve to papules and then to vesicles.
