Neonates#
Infant-toddler age
Malignancy
asphyxia of newborn, trisomy 21
-febrile convulsion
Malignancy:
– Acute leukemia
– Brain tumors
Convulsion in children 1 Neonatal Period 2 • <6 mo old- 3-@ 6 mo - 3 yr old 4 > 3 yr old:
– Convulsion in children:
• Neonatal Period–obstetric injuries, asphyxia, congenital
diseases, intracranial hemorrhage and sepsis. • <6 mo old–intracranial infection, tetany of Vitamin D
deficiency. • 6 mo - 3 yr old: high fever, intracranial infection. • > 3 yr old: epilepsy, intracranial tumor or infection.
Subconjunctival Hemorrhage
Subconjunctival hemorrhage is a frequent finding in normal newborns. It results from the breakage of small vessels during the pressure of delivery. It is asymptomatic, does not affect vision, and spontaneously resolves in several days.

Newborn with severe respiratory distress & scaphoid abdomin .
Hydrocele
Transillumination is helpful in
confirming the presence of a
hydrocele.
Barlow test /
Ortolani test/
-Addction of hip , post dislocaton
Ortolani / knee flexion 90 then abduction
Discharge planning
Vitamin K status: give script and education for further
oral vitamin K if required
If discharged at less than 24 hours of age, advise parents to seek urgent medical assistance if:
- Meconium not passed within 24 hours
- Appears jaundiced within first 24 hours
- Elevated temperature
- Vomiting
- Difficulty feeding
- Lethargy
- Decreased urine or stools
