What does a pediatric psychologist do?
Assessment, intervention & consultation
-developmental and/or psychological issues that may occur as a result of injury/illness, medical disorders.
What is enuresis?
- repeated voiding of urine into bed or clothes
- over 5 years old
- at least 2x week for 3 months straight
causes of enuresis include:
- idiopathic (cause unknown?)
- hormone deficiency
- genetics
- dysfunctional voiding behaviour
social, emotional and behavioral implications for enuresis include:
- bullying
- inappropriate parental responses
- poor self esteem
- anxiety / low mood
treatment of enuresis:
- psycho-education
- self-monitoring
- healthy bladder routines
- positive reinforcement for dry nights
what is alarm therapy?
having an alarm go off when a pad is made wet
what is hypospadias?
when males have the opening of the urethra on the underside of the penis
what is bladder exstrophy (turned inside out)?
when the bladder is outside the body
what is spina bifida?
incomplete closing of the backbone and membranes around the spinal cord.
what is myelomeningocele?
the most serious form of spina bifida
what is a mitrofanoff?
procedure to tunnel the contents from the bladder to outside the body
why are people referred from urology clinic to psychology:
- coping with hospitalization
- adjusting to diagnosis
- low motivation and self esteem
- social concerns and bullying
- behavioral challenges
define chronic illness:
any illness that lasts longer than 3 months
what is type 1 diabetes?
autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks and kills beta cells in pancreas (responsible for making insulin)
