What is anxiety?
mood state by strong negative emotion and bodily symptoms of tension in anticipation of future danger or misfortunes
Why is anxiety good?
readies children to physically and emotionally handle danger
What is fear?
present orientated emotional reaction to current danger
what is panic?
group of physical symptoms that occur in the absence of obvious danger or threat
What are the 7 categories of anxiety disorders?
- SAD (separation anxiety disorder)
- Specific phobia
- Social Anxiety disorder
- Selective mutism
- Panic Disorder
- Agoraphobia
- GAD: generalized anxiety disorder
What is separation anxiety important from 7 months to preschool years?
Otherwise it may suggest insecure attachment
what is a phobia?
- persistent, irrational, or exaggerated fear
- lasts at least 6 months
What is social anxiety disorder (social phobia)
fear of social or performance requirements. can expose child to scrutiny and possible embarassment
what is selective mutism?
failure to talk in specific situations. may be loud at home
What is a panic attack?
sudden, overwhelming period of intense fear or discomfort (4+ physical symptoms)
what is panic disorder?
recurrent unexpected panic attacks
What is agoraphobia?
fear/anxiety in certain places or situations
What is generalized anxiety disorder?
- uncontrollable anxiety and worry about many events and activities on most days

- accompanied by at least somatic symptom
What two components does OCD have?
Obsessions: persistent thoughts, ideas, impulses
Compulsions: repetitive intentional behaviours to relieve anxiety from obsessions
what are some OCD related disorders?
- body dysmorphic disorder: preoccupation with defects or flaws in physical appearance
- hoarding: difficulty parting with possessions
- Trichtillomania: recurrent pulling out of hair
- excoriation disorder: recurrent skin picking
