What is depression called in children under 7?
Anaclitic Depression: infants raised in clean but emotionally cold environment.
What 2 categories does the DSM 5 divide mood disorders into?
- Depressive disorders: dysphoria
- Bipolar disorders: euphoria and mania
Why is depression in children overlooked?
it frequently co-occurs with more visible disorders (anxiety and conduct disorders)
Why is it difficult to use DSM criteria for depression in children?
lots of the symptoms may be normal childhood occurrences.

What are the differences between MDD, PDD & DMDD?
MDD:
-minimum 2 weeks, depressed mood, loss of interest and mood
PDD:
-generally less severe and longer in duration
DMDD:
- frequent and severe temper outbursts (extreme over rxns to situation)
-chronic, persistently irritable or angry
What are the two pathways from social and peer problems in depressive disorders?

depression prone individuals have a negative attribution style - blaming themselves for negative events in life and leads to helplessness and avoidance of those events in the future
what is becks cognitive model?
depressed individuals make negative interpretations about life from biased and negative beliefs as filters
What is the negative cognitive triad?

- the future
Why are children of people with depression at higher risk?
Genetic components. 3x risk of having depression.
why is it important to treat depression in children?
- longer duration than adults
- impairment on functioning/QOL
- increased suicidality
- risk for other psychological problems
What is treatment in the cognitive therapy zone?
-recognizing self defeating thought patterns and change in negative thought patterns to positive and optimistic ones
What medication is prescribed for depression?
SSRIs
What are some symptoms of a manic episode?
- inflated self esteem
- decreased need for sleep
- more talkative than usual
- subjective experience that thoughts are racing
- distractibility
- excessive involvement in pleasurable activities
What can Bipolar disorder symptoms be similar to? Which disorder?
ADHD
How is Bipolar disorder differentiated by ADHD?
- grandiosity
- elated mood
- decreased need for sleep
What is usual treatment for Bipolar disorder?
Lithium
