Pediatric Gait Flashcards
1
Q
Pre-Ambulatory Motor Development
A
- Infancy: symmetrical extension/flexion
- 5-6 months: ab/glut synergy
- 5-10 months: lateral weight shifts
- 9-10 months: early creeping
- 10-12 months: squatting, early standing
- 12-15 months: early walking
2
Q
Characteristics of New Walkers
A
- Wide base of support
- Short, uneven steps
- arms in high guard
- IC at forefoot or foot flat
- Minimal propulsion
- Waddling (no rotation)
- Fast cadence
- Smaller step length
3
Q
Gait Maturation
A
13-18 Months: - Full PROM of hip & knee - plantar arches - refining balance between flex/ex in standing 18 Months: - Heel strike at IC - arms swing reciprocally - BOS begins narrowing 2 Years: - Phasic muscle patterns - running pattern emerges 3 Years: - decreased step length but mature gait pattern 4 Years: - full reciprocal arm swing 7 Years: Adult gait pattern
4
Q
5 Attributes of Normal Gait
A
- Preparation of foot for weight assumption
- Stance phase stability
- Swing limb clearance
- Adequate step length
- Energy efficiency
5
Q
5 Affordances that make 5 Attributes of Normal Gait Possible
A
- stable core
- adequate flexibility
- controlled weight shift
- dynamic single leg balance
- reciprocal movement
6
Q
Gait Assessment
A
- postural alignment
- postural control
- ROM
- primary impairments (strength, motor control, sensory feedback)
- compensatory strategies
7
Q
Toe Walking Presentation
A
- can’t squat with heels down
- run fast
- relapse with growth spurt
- average gross motor test scores
- bouncy gait
- IC at forefoot
- vaulting
- shortened step length
8
Q
Toe Walking Treatment
A
- core strengthening
- stretching
- bracing/taping
- balance
- flexion patterns
- address sensory dysfunction
