Pectoral Girdle And Upper Limbs Flashcards
Clavicle (collar bones)
Slender bone, elongated S-shape
Run from manubrium of sternum to the scapula
Brace freely moveable scapula
Provide muscle attachments for upper limbs, chest and back
Scapulae (shoulder blades)
Broad, triangular shaped bones on either side of upper back
Spine on posterior surface
Has two processes, acromion and coracoid
Depression called glenoid cavity
Acromion process
Forms tip of shoulder
Articulates with the clavicle
Provides attachments for muscles of the upper limb and chest
Coracoid process
Curves anteriorly and inferiorly to the clavicle
Provides attachments for upper limb and chest muscles
Glenoid cavity (glenoid fossa)
Depression that articulates with the head of humerus
Function of the upper limbs
Form the framework of arm, forearm and hand
Provide attachments for muscles
Function in levers that move limb parts
What bones are included in the upper limbs?
Humerus Radius Ulna Carpals Metacarpals Phalanges
Humerus
Heavy bone
Extends from scapula to elbow
Round head articulates with glenoid cavity
What are the two processes of the humerus?
And what is their function?
Greater tubercle
Lesser tubercle
Provide attachments for muscles that move the upper limb at the shoulder
Deltoid tuberosity
V shaped area
Provides attachment for deltoid
Humerus has two condyles at lower end.
What are they called?
And what do they articulate with?
Capitulum, trochlea
Articulate with radius and ulna
What are the two depressions of the humerus?
And which receives what processes?
Coronoid fossa receives coronoid process of ulna when elbow bends
Olecranon fossa receives olecranon process of ulna when elbow straightens
Radius
Located on thumb side
Extends from elbow to wrist
Disk-like head articulates with humerus and ulna. Allows radius to rotate freely
Proximal Has radial tuberosity that serves as attachment for biceps brachii
Distal has styloid process that serves as attachments for wrist ligaments
Ulna
Longer than radius
Overlaps end of humerus posteriorly
Proximal end has trochlear notch
Olecranon process and coronoid process provide sites of muscle attachment
Wrench like opening that articulates with humerus
Trochlear notch
