A

^ Impose sanctions on countries threatening world peace
^ Authorising the use of force by member states
^ Sending UN peacekeeping forces to prevent conflict outbreaks, stabilise conflict, bring lasting peace and stabilise governments
^ Running the International Criminal Court to prosecute those committing war crimes.

What is an example of the UN’s work?

A

Mission in Kosovo - UN sent peacekeepers to keep Serbian army out of Kosovo. They then set up political parties to allow the Kosvar democracy to develop and get the country back on its feet.

A

^ Establishing International terms who can intervene in areas of conflict.
^Criticising - governments over how much they spend on weapons and defence.
^ Engaging in public demonstrations (campaining)
^ Organising public awareness of the moral issues surrounding weapons
^ Campaigning against the abuse of human rights and the causes of war.
^ Informing - catholics on the teachings of Jesus.

Why does a war occur?

A

^ Religion - if followers of a religion are treated badly people may invade to protect them -Fighting for holy land. - Wars between same religion over different beliefs

^ Nationalism and ethnicity - belief that each ethnic group should have its own country - belief that minor ethnic groups should be removed from country - civil wars in countries because different ethnic groups fight for their beliefs

^ Economics - want resources (like oil) that the country has - jobs and wages create problems (immigrants taking jobs)

^Ideological and political differences - different groups fighting for power - e.g north and south Korea.

A

The idea that it is right to go to war if the reasons are just. E.g if it has been agreed by the UN or self-defence.

  • Jesus said you should love your enemies and turn the other cheek.
  • Fifth commandment is do not kill
  • Jesus wouldn’t let Peter fight back when he was arrested
  • Modern warfare effects civilians so wars can’t be justified.

  • It is their teachings to bring peace which just war does.
  • St Paul said christians should obey the orders of the government so they should fight is government says so.
  • Jesus didn’t condemn soliders - he praised their faith.
  • It may be protecting people which is just like the police force - you don’t have to kill - way of showing golden rule and loving your neighbour.

^ Ahimsa - non violence
^ Bad Karma - stops moksha and delays samsara.
^ Ghandi showed that pacifism can work to get what you want
^ Modern warfare is bound to kill innocent people which is forbidden in Hindu religion

  • In caste system - the warriors duty is to defend hinduism
  • Gita says that fighting in wars is okay as killing them doesn’t kill their atman
  • Law of Manu supports just wars
  • Dharma to protect society and keep justice for people
