PE/DVT Flashcards
What are the components of Virchow’s Triad?
1) venous stasis
2) hypercoagulable state
3) intimal injury
What disorder has deficient inactivation of Factor V leading to a hypercoaguable state?
Factor V Leiden
Factor V functions as a cofactor to allow factor Xa to activate thrombin. Thrombin in turn cleaves fibrinogen to form fibrin, which polymerizes to form a clot. Deficiency prevents efficient inactivation of factor V by activated protein C causing overproduction of thrombin.
What substance is released during dissection that leads to production of fibrin?
Thromboplastin
What are signs and symptoms of PE?
1) acute onset pleuritic pain and dyspnea
2) tachypnea
3) tachycardia
What are EKG findings in a PE?
S-wave in lead I
Q-wave in lead III
T-wave inversion in lead III
