What is the CSF?
The cerebrospinofluid. It is a fluid that flows in and around the hollow spaces of the brain and spinal cord and between the two meninges (thin layer of tissue that covers and protects the brain and spinal cord)
What antibodies are looked for in the CSF to check for measles infection?
IgG and IgM
How does a throat swab check for measles?
Swab used to scrape throat and nasopharynx. RT-PCR is used to detect measles virus or viral RNA. Detects genetic material.
What resources will an outbreak team need?
IgG testing.
MMR vaccine.
How is measles transmitted?
Airborne virus - spreads through coughing and sneezing.
Can live for up to 2hrs in airspace
What is herd immunity?
Resistance in a population due to some being immune.
What is sepsis?
A serious complication of an infection.
What do antibiotics do?
Destroy or slow down the growth of bacteria.
What are bactericidal antibiotics?
Kill bacteria
What do bacteriostatic antibiotics do?
Inhibit bacterial growth
