How do you establish initial rapport?
A
- greet patient
- introduce yourself
- handshake?
- eye contact
- smile
- clarify your role and the nature of the interview
- address confidentiality
- check name and date of birth

How do you discover the reasons for the patient’s attendance?
A
- don’t interrupt
- don’t assume they have only one complaint
- try to discover the hidden agenda (psychological concerns e.g.)
- let them complete the opening statement
- ask open questions as well as closed
- take a patient-centred approach
- active listening

A
- open
- “tell me what you have come to see the doctor about” - less medical

How should you approach wait time/pacing?
A
- allow pauses and thinking time
- don’t concentrate on the next question - listen

- neutral comments e.g. go on, yes, uh-huh
- avoid paraphrasing and repetition

Checking patient has said all they want to before moving on
