patterns in the periodic table Flashcards
How does the periodic table group its elements?
The periodic table groups elements with similar properties.
Where are the metals found in the periodic table?
Metals are on the left
Where are the nonmetals found in the periodic table?
Nonmetals are on the right
Where are the metalloids found in the periodic table?
Metalloids are in between metals and nonmetals on the STAIRCASE
How many groups/columns are there in the periodic table?
There are 18 groups/columns.
How many periods/rows are there in the periodic table?
There are 7 periods/rows
What are groups?
Groups are families of elements with similar physical and chemical properties.
What can periods indicate?
Periods can indicate reactivity. Elements further down a group are more reactive
What are some properties of metals?
Properties of metals:
Shiny
Malleable
Good conductor of heat+electricity
What are some properties of nonmetals?
Properties of nonmetals:
Dull
Brittle
Not a good conductor of heat+electricity
What are some examples of nonmetals?
Non metals:
Poor conductors of heat + electricity
(carbon,nitrogen,oxygen,phosphorus,sulfur,chlorine)
What are metals?
Metals:
Most elements
Good conductors of heat + electricity
What are some properties/examples of metalloids?
Metalloids(stairs): Act like metals and sometimes like nonmetals The right side of the periodic table Both sides of the zigzag line Boron, Silicon, Germanium
