Pattern Guide - Vance Flashcards

1
Q

Do no request High Key from initial if…

A
  1. High pattern is active
  2. Straight in between 5 and 2 NM
  3. A HAPL is between “ONE MINUTE” and “HIGH KEY”
  4. Aircraft is orbiting at High Key

Q

Do NOT Request low Closed/Closed/ low Key if

A
  1. Traffic conflict on inside downwind or high downwind
  2. Straight-in between 5 and 2 miles
  3. Aircraft between “REPORT HIGH KEY” and “LOW KEY”
  4. Aircraft reported “INITIAL”
    • If you are reasonably certain the aircraft on initial has entered the break you may request closed/low key
    • Request closed/low key after passing runway midpoint
    • Do not initiate low closed patterns when parasailing operations are in effect.
    • If a conflict exists, continue straight ahead and turn crosswind NLT 2 miles past departure end. If
conflict is resolved while in the turn and before rolling wings level, you may request low closed/closed/low key if you can do so immediately. Only aircraft with a rated pilot can do this.

Q

Breakout from Inside Downwind

A
  1. Another aircraft in final is not in sight
  2. Straight-in is inside 2 miles and not in sight
  3. An ELP is inside low-key and normal spacing cannot be maintained
  4. Pattern spacing cannot be maintained within a normal ground track
  5. Not properly configured by the perch point

Q

Do NOT initiate the Final Turn or Descent from low Key and Breakout IF:

A
  1. Straight-in reports “TWO MILES” and not in-sight
  2. You cannot maintain normal pattern size and spacing BEHIND straight-in from inside downwind/high
    downwind/low key
    • At Dogface, do not start final turn until aircraft flying in opposite direction rolls wings level on final OR
do not descend from low key until the preceding aircraft is inside% mile on final
    • After final turn, descent, or out of low key, do NOT breakout. Plan to Low Approach following normal
pattern ground track. Straight in may be directed to discontinue.
    • IF you have straight-in insight, report it in sight, and execute the final turn or decent out of low key and
can maintain normal pattern size and spacing BEHIND the straight-in.

Q

low Approach/Restricted low Approach/Go-Around

A

Pilot Reports, or controller directs “LOW APPROACH”
1. Continue final turn or descent from Low Key
2. Initiate a Go-Around so the aircraft does not touchdown
3. Acknowledge RSU with “CALLSIGN, CLEARED LOW APPROACH”

Q

Do NOT Initiate the Break from Initial when an Aircraft

A
  1. Between 5 and 2 NM on a straight-in
  2. Orbiting at high key
  3. Between “REPORT HIGH KEY” and “LOW KEY” (Break at discretion of controller)
    • If told, “IN THE BREAK, ROLL OUT.” Roll out ofturn and re-intercept initial ground track

Q

If you CANNOT Break, “CALLSIGN, BREAK POINT CARRY THROUGH”

A
  1. Turn crosswind at departure end of the runway and clear of conflict
  2. When directed by the controller
    - Pilots may be approved a late break. Acknowledge with CALLSIGN. Ensure sufficient spacing behind traffic on inside downwind. Do NOT request a late break.

Q

Crosswind

A

•Climb no higher than 1800 MSL until clear of inside downwind ground track
• Turn crosswind between 1 and 2 miles past departure end unless otherwise directed by RSU Controller
•During an offset, turn crosswind mile past departure end of the runway
• During a “BREAK POINT CARRY THROUGH” turn crosswind at the Departure end of runway
• When parasailing operations are in effect and Runway 35 is in use, delay turn to crosswind until X mile
past Departure end

Q

Do NOT Request High Key from the Pattern if

A
  1. More than 3 total aircraft in the pattern
  2. When the high pattern is active
  3. A HAPL has not yet reported “ONE MINUTE”
    • Aircrews can request direct high key for an ELP from any point in the pattern

Q

Controller directs “RESTRICTED LOW APPROACH”

A
  1. Continue final turn or descent from low Key
  2. Descend NO LOWER than 500ft AGL{1800 MSL) unless a higher altitude is specified
  3. Acknowledge RSU directions with “CALLSIGN, CLEARED RESTRICTED LOW APPROACH”

Q

On a go-around, low approach, or restricted low approach, do not climb above 500ft AGL until:

A

Q

Offset the Runway

A
  1. When directed by the controller
  2. Pilot will overfly personnel or equipment at less than 500ft AGL
    • Another aircraft performing a full stop is not considered personnel or equipment
  3. Aircraft in departure position
  4. Potential conflict on departure leg
    • i.e. initial takeoff, touch-and-go, or go-around
    • Clear runway in direction of the break unless otherwise directed
    • Clear runway sufficient distance for both crew members to see conflict
