Pathoma - Salivary Gland Flashcards
Mumps - clinical presentation
bilateral parotid gland swelling
Mumps - other possible findings
orchitis (sterility possible), pancreatitis, aseptic meningitis
Mumps- lab values
increased serum amylase (parotid/pancreatic involvement)
Sialidenitis - definition
inflammation of a salivary gland (unilateral)
Sialidenitis - cause
obstructive stone (sialothiasis)
Sialidenitis - causitive agent
S. aureus
Pleomorphic adenoma
most common salivary gland tumor (benign)
Pleomorphic adenoma - tissue types
stromal + epithelial
Pleomorphic adenoma - location
usually parotid gland
Pleomorphic adenoma - clinical presentation
mobile, painless, circumscribed mass at angle of jaw
Pleomorphic adenoma - unique problem and cause
high rate of recurrence (irregular margins-hard to remove fully)
Pleomorphic adenoma - complication
rarely progresses to carcinoma (suddenly get facial nerve problems after years of mass w/ no problems)
Warthin tumor
cystic tumor w/ lymphocytic tissue (benign, 2nd most common tumor)
Mucoepidermoid carcinoma
most common malignant tumor of salivary gland
Mucoepidermoid carcinoma - tissues
mucinous + squamous
