Oral herpes - description
vesicle of oral mucosa
ruptures->shallow, painful red ulcer
Oral herpes - population and clinical course
primary infection in children, virus remains dormant and can be reactivated later in life
Oral herpes - causative agent
HSV-1 (some HSV-2)
Reactivation of oral herpes brought on by:
stress or sunlight
Dormant herpes virus resides in
Trigeminal nerve ganglion
Squamous cell carcinoma - defintion
malignant neoplasm of squamous cells lining oral mucosa
Risk factors for squamous cell carcinoma
smoking and alcohol
Squamous cell carcinoma - location
floor of mouth (most common)
SCC: precursor lesions
leukoplakia/erythroplakia
Pathologies to differentiate from leukoplakia
oral candidiasis/thrush (IC pts) or hairy leukoplakia (EBV)
either will scrape off easily, w/o bleeding (unlike leukoplakia)
