Small Vessel Vasculitis (arterioles, capillaries & venules)
What causes vasculitis in HSP?
IgA immune complex deposition
What type of hypersensitivity is HSP?
Type III
What is the most common vasculitis in children?
HSP
What does HSP present with?
Palpable purpura (not blood bc it’s palpable) on buttocks and legs, GI pain and bleeding, and hematuria (IgA nephropathy) –> causes glomerular bleeding
What does HSP usually follow?
An upper respiratory infection (URI) –> excessive production of IgA —> deposits
What should be used to treat HSP?
Disease is self limited - supportive
Can HSP recur?
YES
What is used to treat HSP when it is severe?
Steroids
