pathologies of skull and facial bones Flashcards
1
Q
what are the 4 pathologies that can occur
A
- hydrocephaly
- multiple myeloma
- paget’s
- fracture and dislocations
2
Q
what is hydrocephaly?
A
- involves excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in ventricles of brain
- head appears enlarged = raised intra-cranial pressure
3
Q
what does increased intra-cranial pressure lead to (ICP)?
A
- headache
- can further injure brain and spinal cord
- seizures
- strokes
- neurological damages
4
Q
what is multiple myeloma?
A
- malignant bone tumour
- rare form of cancer characterised by excessive production and improper function of plasma cells in bone marrow
5
Q
where is multiple myeloma best seen in?
A
lateral view of skull
6
Q
what is paget’s?
A
- chronic progressive skeletal condition
- caused by abnormal rapid bone destruction and reformation
- new bone may occur in one or more regions of body
- dense and fragile bone
7
Q
symptoms of paget’s
A
- bone pain
- arthritis
- deformities
- fractures
8
Q
how is paget’s seen in radiographs
A
- lytic and slcerotic lesiosn on skull radiographs of paget’s patients
- often described as cotton wool appearance
9
Q
what is TMJ - fracture dislocation
A
- fracture of left mandibular condyle with dislocated TMJ
